OpenAI buys TBPN after internal study finds it cheaper to acquire a personality than to develop one
What's going on here?
OpenAI just made its first ever media acquisition, and it's a talk show.
This morning, OpenAI announced it bought TBPN, the daily livestream where John Coogan and Jordi Hays yap about tech for three hours like it's SportsCenter, but for nerds. Yes, it's not a bit (although dropping the news right upon April Fools certainly made it seem like tech bro buffoonery).
TBPN launched in October 2024 and now pulls roughly 70,000 viewers per episode with a team of 11.
Sama calls TBPN his “favorite tech show” and promises to keep them fed with “occasional stupid decisions.”
The deal:
- Price officially undisclosed, but WSJ and FT report “low hundreds of millions” (Joe Rogan's entire Spotify renewal was $250M, for scale)
- TBPN keeps full editorial control: their guests, their takes, their 11am slot
- The show now reports to Chris Lehane, OpenAI's global affairs boss
- TBPN's $30M-a-year ad business is getting shut down entirely
Tough talk from a company losing $38 billion a year.
But for Coogan, it's a full circle moment: Sam funded his first company (Soylent) back in 2013.
What does this mean?
70,000 viewers is a rounding error by normal standards.
But it's THE 70,000: the founders, VCs, and execs who decide where tech's money and attention go. OpenAI is reportedly raising $100 billion at an $850B+ valuation ahead of an IPO, and it just put Silicon Valley's favorite news show on the payroll.
It's also a precedent flip. The last generation of moguls bought newspapers: Bezos took the Washington Post, Benioff took Time.
The AI generation is buying creators instead.
Why should I care?
1) Try roasting the guy who pays you.
The most popular tech show is now owned by the AI industry's main character, and it reports to a man TechCrunch calls a “master of the political dark arts.” OpenAI swears editorial independence is locked into the contract. Maybe so. But that remains to be seen.
2) Getting acquired is the new brand deal for creators.
TBPN spent 18 months earning trust with tech's most valuable audience, then sold for more than most startups exit for. That resets the creator playbook. A small audience of exactly the right people is now an acquirable asset, not ad inventory. You can expect more people with deep pockets to go shopping.
